DWR TREATED VS. UNTREATED DOWN: WHICH ONE IS MORE WATER-RESISTANT?

DWR TREATED VS. UNTREATED DOWN: WHICH ONE IS MORE WATER-RESISTANT?

Is treated goose down better than untreated down? A common assumption is that applying a paraffin or wax-based treatment to down improves its waterproofing for those times that your sleeping bag comes into contact with moisture. But what that argument conveniently forgets is that down is inherently highly water resistant. Geese do float on water and spend a lot of time there, right?

In this video, Brad sets out to test the claim that you should buy sleeping bags that use a waterproofing treatment on their down fill if you're concerned about your sleeping bag getting wet. As part of the test, Brad submerges in water for two minutes both the untreated goose down we use in our bags and the same down but in a treated form. How will the untreated down fare against the treated one? Watch the video to learn more.
